The pink beach on Komodo Islands in Indonesia has become popular for its pink sand color and pristine blue water. The good news is that it is also relatively easy to visit on a Komodo Island tour.

Komodo Island Tour

Komodo Beach is not the only pink beach in Indonesia — there are several others in the Komodo National Park and one on the nearby island of Lombok — but pink beaches, in general, are extremely rare, with only a handful of them worldwide!

This travel guide will show you how to visit both of Komodo’s famous pink beaches — the pink beach on Komodo Island and the equally renowned (far more vibrant colors) pink beach on Padar Island!

Where Is Pink Beach

The pink sand beaches are in the Komodo National Park, an island group in east Indonesia. The nearest city is the Flores fishing town of Labuan Bajo, which has its airport and a variety of restaurants and hotels to enjoy in between the best tour to Komodo Island. There are two pink beaches on the Komodo Islands, one on Padar Island and one on Komodo Island.

Pink Beach on Padar Island

If you’re looking for the most vibrant pink beach in Indonesia, look no further! The sand color here is brighter than on Komodo Island’s coast, and we even discovered a heart-shaped piece of red coral on the sand.

The color of this pink sand beach is noticeable, especially if you visit on a sunny day. In the sun, the red/pink sand appears brighter. This pink beach is located in a hidden bay on Padar Island’s north side, just a short boat ride from the famous viewpoint.

Pink Beach on Komodo Island

This second pink beach is straight on Komodo Island, the houses of the famous Komodo dragons, though you’re doubtful to see them walking around here because they prefer the hills.

This Komodo beach’s sand isn’t as pink or red as the one on Padar Island, but tall cliffs and mountains surround it, and the coastline itself is more photogenic (sand color aside).

The Way To Get There

The pink beach can only be reached by boat from Labuan Bajo. As the crow flies, this Komodo beach is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from town, and the journey usually takes 3 hours with a slow boat, maybe less than half that with a speedboat.

The Komodo islands are now easier to reach from Bali than ever before, thanks to a weekly flight between them. You can also fly from Jakarta, Surabaya, or Ende to the Labuan Bajo airport. When you arrive in Labuan Bajo, you can book a boat tour to the pink beach at the harbor or a time online.

What Makes the Sand Pink?

Pink beaches are thought to be colored by foraminifera, which are microscopic red organisms that are found in coral reefs and wash up on beaches.

A pink sand beach overall is extremely rare, with only a few examples found worldwide. They’re even more uncommon than black beaches.
